FCE WEBQUEST: Lost at sea! TASK 2 or TASK 3

Lost at sea: Escaping a watery grave.

Now you get to work on your own, you may choose task 2 or 3 (only one of them!)

Task 2

● What emotional and physical traits enable
survivors to make it through life-threatening
situations?

● Research the psychology of survival and write
an  article (250-300 words) for a magazine
explaining what kind of mental attitude is
necessary to survive a harrowing experience.
Include real life examples of survival.

Task 3

● Research survival skills that enable people to survive at sea should their yacht
capsize, catch fire, or they lose their captain.

● Use these  questions to help  your research

1. How can the word SURVIVAL help you get through a crisis?
2. If you have no water to drink, should you eat?  Why or why not?
3. How can you reduce your water loss even if you're sweating?
4. What can you drink if you are stranded at sea?  What shouldn't you drink?
5. How can you get food?

● Use this information to write a diary describing how you managed to survive 10 days
at sea with no water or food. Don't forget to include information about mental health
and state of mind. You may present your diary in Powerpoint format making it as interesting as
possible to the rest of the group.

FCE WEBQUEST: Lost at sea! TASK 1

Lost at sea: Escaping a watery grave.

Introduction:The facts

●You and your team have hired a yacht.
●None of you have any previous sailing experience, and you have also hired an experienced skipper and a two-person crew.
●As you sail through the Southern Pacific Ocean a fire breaks out and much of the yacht and its contents are destroyed.
●The yacht is slowly sinking.
●Your location is unclear because vital navigational and radio equipment has been damaged.
●The yacht skipper and crew have been lost while trying to fight the fire.
●Your best guess is that you are approximately 1000 miles South West of the nearest mainland.

TASK 1

●You have salvaged a four man rubber life raft.
●The total contents of your combined pockets amounts to a packet of tissues, a wet smartphone and 3 $5 notes.
●You and your friends have managed to save the following 16 items, undamaged and intact after the fire.

YOUR CHANCES OF SURVIVAL WILL DEPEND UPON YOUR ABILITY TO RANK THESE  16 ITEMS IN THEIR RELATIVE ORDER OF IMPORTANCE. GOOD LUCK!

Use the suggested web pages, and any others you decide to investigate, to research how important these objects really are in an emergency situation like this one. When you have collected sufficient information, work together as a group and rank the 16 items in order of importance. Present your ranking in Powerpoint giving a brief explanation for each choice made.

Salvaged items:

  1. Sextant
  2. Small transistor radio
  3. Shaving mirror
  4. 7 square metres of opaque plastic sheeting
  5. Mosquito netting
  6. Shark repellent
  7. 20 litre can of water
  8. ¼ litre rum
  9. 2 cases army rations
  10. 5 metres nylon rope
  11. Maps of the Pacific Ocean
  12. 2 boxes of chocolate bars
  13. Floating seat cushion
  14. Fishing kit
  15. 8 litre can of oil/petrol mixture
  16. An Oar
